Digital Sustainability
I help you build and keep a lighter website by measuring what each page actually weighs and does, and removing what it does not need. I report measurements, not environmental claims I cannot support.
New v6 draft from the service brief, awaiting review
The problem
- Your pages have grown heavier over time and you cannot say which images, scripts or plugins are responsible.
- You want a website that is more responsible, but the claims you see online are vague and hard to check.
- Each new feature or tool gets added and none is ever questioned or removed.
What I do about it
- I measure transferred size, request counts and script load page by page, so you see where the weight actually sits.
- I keep measured results separate from environmental estimates, and I state what any number includes and leaves out.
- I ask every addition to justify itself and set size budgets, so new features are weighed against what they cost.

What you get out of it
Your pages carry less unnecessary weight and complexity, and you have measurements you can show and a way to keep them that way.
Who it’s for
- You want your website to be lighter and simpler and would like to see evidence of it.
- You manage a content-heavy site where media and third-party scripts have accumulated.
- You are planning a new build or redesign and want restraint written into the brief.
- You need to describe your website's footprint honestly in a report, and want measurements rather than slogans.
If your main concern is how fast the site feels, website performance is the more direct service. If you are starting a build and want the site made lean from the beginning, website design and development covers that.
What’s included
Page weight audit
I measure the transferred size of key pages, broken down by images, scripts, fonts, video and other files.
Complexity review
I count requests, plugins, third-party tools and features, and check which ones are actually used.
Media and font reduction
I recommend formats, sizing and loading changes, and cut the fonts and assets the design does not need.
Third-party dependencies
I list embeds, trackers and external services as ongoing costs, and help you decide whether each is justified.
Size and complexity budgets
I set budgets for new pages and features, so trade-offs are visible before something is added.
Honest reporting
I report what was measured, how and under what conditions, and I flag any estimate separately.
How it works
Measure the current pages
I record weight, requests and scripts for the pages you choose, with the tool and conditions noted.
Find the unnecessary
I separate what serves the visitor's task from what is habit, duplication or leftover.
Reduce and simplify
I make the changes, or write a clear list for your developer, starting with what removes the most for the least effort.
Compare and set budgets
I remeasure under the same conditions, report the difference and agree limits for the future.

What is digital sustainability for a website?
In my work it means keeping pages as light and simple as the task allows, and measuring that. I treat page weight, requests and complexity as the things I can check, and I do not claim more than that.
Will a lighter site reduce my carbon footprint?
I cannot tell you that from page weight alone. Environmental estimates depend on assumptions about infrastructure, electricity and devices, so I report the measured change and keep any estimate separate, with its model and limits stated.
Do you offer a carbon rating or certificate?
No. I report measurements I can verify, such as transferred size and request counts, and I do not issue ratings or certifications.
Is this the same as speeding up my site?
They overlap, but they are not identical. Less data transferred can shorten part of a wait, though a small page can still start slowly. Performance work focuses on how the site feels, and this work focuses on what it carries.
Tell me what you need to achieve.
We can work out the right next step before committing to a solution. You can book this on its own. An ongoing partnership is optional, never a requirement.
